The brief was to declutter the beautiful Grade I listed structure and provide new and revitalised passenger facilities incorporating ticket, information and retail accommodation within a challenging timescale to meet funding criteria.

The scope involved extensive works on the main concourse and the sensitive issue of internalising the existing entrance portico with a clearly contemporary, separate glazed enclosure behind the historic stone façade transforming the space.

Previously a drop off space for carriages, the portico has become a revitalised city gateway with the opportunity to maximise revenue generation by altering underutilised accommodation to meet burgeoning retail demand from the 20,500 passengers per day who use the primary public transport interchange.

“Working closely with Network Rail and English Heritage they achieved listed building consent effectively and efficiently in a very short period of time.  Work has then been carried out on the live site with minimal disruption to the station and its users.”
