The Importance of Model Making

1 December 2017

The costs and technologies applied to model making has changed significantly over the past 10 years, but remains essential in design thinking and innovation.  In this video blog, Gordon Murray, partner at Ryder, leads a group discussion on the importance physical crafted models still have in a digital world.

“When I was a student, everybody made a model at the end of the project as part of the final presentation and some of them were stunning. The cost of model making now has decreased and the facilities that most schools and practices have available are incredible. Now there is a greater use of models through to the exhibition and also during the thinking process.

Digital technology advances means you’re now continually working in 3D, allowing you to explore and experiment for your own purposes. Even with CGIs it remains a 2D output and still misses closing the gap in understanding, in how you effectively communicate visions and ideas, with other people.”
