Anderson High School in Shetland Officially Opened

The school and associated halls of residence was officially opened by education secretary John Swinney, Deputy First Minister on 24 September.

The scheme was designed by international design practice Ryder Architecture as part of Scottish Schools for the Future Programme with Hub North Scotland, with Morrison Construction as main contractors.  Additional projects for the portfolio include Campbeltown Grammar, Kirn Primary School and Wick Community Campus.

During the opening event, guests were informed of the benefits of the school, such as aiding economic regeneration and kickstarting future expansion of the Lerwick area.  A commemorative plaque in a cairn was also unveiled, drawing on the rich history of the site.

George Smith, chairman of the council’s education and families committee said, “I am delighted that with the financial support from the Scottish Government, we have been able to build a modern school and halls of residence which will meet the learning needs of our young people well into the future.”

Chris Malcolm, director at Ryder said, “It has been a real privilege to work on a project of such significance with the people of Shetland over the last five years, and we hope the school and halls serve them well for many years to come.”

John Swinney said, “I would like to thank Shetland Islands Council for inviting me to officially open the magnificent new Anderson High School which was constructed as part of the Scottish Government’s £1.8 billion Schools for the Future programme.  Young people attending Anderson High School now have access to first class state of the art accommodation, and I am pleased the Scottish Government was able to provide almost £36 million to help make this happen.  I wish the school, and everybody in it, all the very best for the future.”
