Planning submitted for Liverpool School of Law

The University of Liverpool has lodged plans to create a new home for the School of Law and Social Justice within its main campus.

A full planning application has been submitted to Liverpool City Council to refurbish the existing five storey Cypress Building on Chatham Street near Abercromby Square, construct a new six storey wing and build a new five storey central atrium between them.  The project represents a major capital investment to develop an environment capable of supporting the strategic aspirations of the School of Law and Social Justice, whose staff are currently distributed over three sites.

The design and access statement by Ryder, shows the atrium would function as the heart of the school and serve as a multi purpose area housing a cafe, reception, social and informal meeting spaces.

Gareth Callen, partner at Ryder said, “Our transformational concept will reconnect the existing Cypress Building to its context and establish the building as a destination in its own right, not just for Law and Social Justice but for all.  Our approach is both contextual and highly sustainable, recognising the important location of the building on a major route for pedestrian traffic.”
