Commercial Success in the RICS North East Awards
71 Grey Street, designed by international design practice Ryder Architecture for client The Hanro Group, won the commercial accolade in the RICS North East awards ceremony on 26 April.
Hitachi Rail Europe, designed by international design practice Ryder, won the regeneration category as well as the coveted project of the year.
The £82m scheme was credited as helping train building return to the north east, creating over 1,200 jobs with Hitachi directly and a further 8,000 within the supply chain, and helping improve the skills levels throughout the region as a result.
The RICS judges, including head judge Adam Serfontein of Hanro Group, said, “The building is both impressive in scale and extremely well thought out to cope with the bespoke demands of train operators to both protect the future of the development and meet new challenges. Quite simply an outstanding example of property, construction and business coming together to deliver something which is sustainable for the region. This is exactly what we want our region to be known for.”
The People’s Theatre, a significant contributor to the artistic and cultural life of Newcastle, was highly commended in the community benefit category.
All Ryder projects were recognised as follows –
Hitachi Rail Europe, winner: project of the year
