Student Design Competition 2017

The Ryder development competition winners discuss their experience of the annual competition held at Cooper’s Studios.

The competition spans over three days and is open to all graduates and assistants in the practice.  This year’s winning team, The Bream Team, comprised Ryan Bemrose, Ana-Maria Cozma, Luke Oldfield and Louise Ryder with their proposal Riley’s Smokestack.

Ryder Architecture newsRight from the design brief, we were aware that this was a great opportunity to embrace the wider Ryder ethos of collaborative working and meet our wider peer group from across all the teams.

We all found it exciting how quickly we could think and work as a team to challenge the brief and begin producing a design response.  This was helped by the fact that everyone was very open, friendly and highly engaged with the project.

It was fantastic to have the chance to work with a real site and client, really inspiring us to push the design forward and developing our design concepts.

The obvious challenge was the time constraint, requiring hard work and focus to complete the project in 48 hours but this was remedied mostly by everyone’s willingness to work hard to produce some great work as well as utilising the individual skills of the team – it also helped that the team really gelled over our ideas and enjoyed working in a competition environment.

Our design drew inspiration from both the raw and rugged beauty of the site and the clients own personal philosophy towards placemaking.

Thank you to Ryder for allowing us to be involved in this experience.
