Pupils Build Confidence by Beating the Architect

As part of its 60th anniversary exhibition at Mann Island, Liverpool, Ryder Architecture is hosting several events during October to engage with students, younger people and businesses in the area.

On 10 October, 15 pupils from Holly Lodge Girl’s School, a recent Ryder design, were joined by its architects and also staff from Liverpool One Lego store, to take part in a range of fun events and competitions.  A whole host of interactive games entertained the pupils, including a “beat the architect” exercise, where they challenged architects “against the clock” to construct a building from Lego.

Other activities included exploring the 16 metre long exhibition display, which covers the practice’s work over 60 years, for a fun inter team quiz with prizes.

Gareth Callen, Ryder’s Liverpool director, said: “This is a great opportunity to follow on from a successful opening event last week with the Lord Mayor of Liverpool and provide a fun afternoon of activity for pupils from a school we designed, helping them to learn about design and buildings in an engaging context with professionals and their school friends.”

Julia Tinsley, head teacher said: “We really appreciated the opportunity to see the exhibition and learn more about the world of building and design with Ryder’s team.  It was a great opportunity for the pupils and they thoroughly enjoyed it.  Our new school will provide a wonderful learning and social environment for the children and it was good to see, in a fun way, some of the thinking behind the world of building.”

Ryder will also be presenting a talk on their utilisation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) on the complex renovation of Manchester Central Library.

On 17 October, associate Graham Cavanagh will discuss how Ryder transformed the previously rather imposing building into a welcoming series of interconnected spaces and the importance of BIM in that process.  The talk takes place at the John Lennon art and design building at Liverpool John Moores University from 18:00.
