Ryder recently hosted the winner of the 2023 net zero neonatal unit challenge, Sabina Lacey, student from Prince of Wales Island International School, Penang, Malaysia.
Launched by Class Of Your Own (COYO), the global challenge tasked students aged 11-16 to design a neonatal unit focussing on carbon net zero design and modern methods of construction. Students’ designs needed to demonstrate empathy for a variety of users, overcome social and cultural issues, and the use of sustainable materials and energy solutions that lead to safer, better quality, replicable healthcare buildings of the future. As a team of one, Sabina’s winning design was of exceptional standard and surpassed the award criteria, a true testament of her talent and vision in design.
After working with Sir Robert McAlpine and Murphy Phillips on design drawings and reviewing net zero requirements, Sabina joined Ryder in London working on New Hospital Programme projects. Coordinated by senior learning and development lead Dr Isabel Williams, Sabina worked alongside her mentor Rafaela Ahsan and received guidance from healthcare experts referencing live projects, attended in–person client meetings and CPD sessions, and reviewed her existing design against the Health Building Notes. She was able to use this new knowledge to develop her existing design and present her new plans and 3D model to the team.
To mark the end of Sabina’s work experience in the UK, we welcomed those who supported her time to a celebratory presentation in London on Friday 19 July – all attendees were blown away by the quality of work.
Commenting on the successful week, Dr Isabel Williams, said: “Sabina is a lovely individual, very talented and strategic in how she approaches her work. She has shown a professional attitude and exemplary skills throughout the work placement, and we have thoroughly enjoyed hosting her this week. We wish her all the best as she continues down her educational pathway!”
