Highgate East is a new, 78 bed mental health inpatient facility for the Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust on the Whittington Hospital site. The facility includes two older adult wards and three rehabilitation wards to support modern day mental health care, to support the facilities previously used at St Pancras Hospital.

Supported by the Mayor of London, the New London Awards celebrate London, seeking the best new projects across every sector that make a positive contribution to their surroundings. The judges noted how the design creates a dynamic and contemporary setting for healthcare created for North London NHS Foundation Trust (formerly Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust).

Delivered by Ryder and BAM Construction, Highgate East combines services for mental and physical health, community facilities and offices within a building that enhances its urban context with quality, human scale design. It creates an environment of inclusiveness that allows service users to feel part of the community and not shut away from it.

Commenting on the successful outcome, Mark Carter, partner at Ryder, said: “Our approach creates a facility which is a ‘good neighbour’ and accessible to all to engender feelings of belonging and help destigmatise mental health services. This award is testament to the project team’s collaborative approach, including invaluable input from clinical staff and service users throughout the design process.
