Inspiring Educational Outcomes on Both Sides of the Border

Ryder teams are joining national conversations around education at this year’s Education Estates and Learning Places Scotland.

Our work in the education sector is a leading example of our goal – to improve the quality of the world around us and, in doing so, improve people’s lives.  Across projects in the school, college and university sectors, Ryder has delivered a wide range of facilities on complex and diverse sites.

In October, Chris Malcolm, Grant Sellars, and Richard Wise will join the Education Estates main stage in a panel discussion sharing lessons learned from England, Scotland and Wales. Panellists will share experiences of where true value is found from both sides of the border.

In this year’s Education Estates awards, Ryder is shortlisted for architectural practice of the year, and Whitley Bay High School is shortlisted in the pupil / student experience category.

Delivered by Ryder and BAM, Whitley Bay High School comprises a new three storey building that accommodates 69 new teaching spaces, a dedicated sixth form area, new halls, and dining and staff areas.  The scheme also including a stand alone sports centre to complement a small portion of retained accommodation and new external dining, social and sports spaces.

The new buildings are designed to comply with the DfE Output Specification, creating a net zero in use school.  Specific requirements are met including maximising daylight, managing heat levels through airtightness, insulation and heat recovery, and work in harmony with the material palette and building arrangement.  Selected on a quality and cost criteria, our proposals combine new accommodation with existing facilities to ensure the site remained fully operational during the execution of the works.

In November, Learning Places Scotland is taking place in GlasgowWe are proud sponsors of this year’s contractor of the year award, as well as finalists for architectural practice of the year Chryston Community Hub is also shortlisted in the best pupil / student experience and inspiring learning spaces categories.

Located in the village of Chryston in Lanarkshire, the innovative Chryston Community Hub integrates a primary school and primary care health centre for North Lanarkshire Council and NHS Lanarkshire on a parkland site. The combined Chryston Primary School and Community Health Clinic is within the first wave of a new direction of efficient service delivery and management led by the Scottish Government and councils.

The design of the hub is inspired by a series of pavilions in the park, allowing the school and clinic to retain their own identity while sharing support facilities, all filled with natural light and a direct connection to the surrounding landscape and its outside learning spaces.
