Ryder Bursary 2026 Winner
Since being introduced in 1995, the Ryder Bursary has invested over £690,000 to support students. Isla Perris, design assistant and our 2026 winner, reflects on her experience to date at Ryder and what’s next.
I first joined Ryder in 2023 for a summer placement in Chris Malcolm’s Glasgow team between my second and third year at the Mackintosh School of Architecture. I quickly took to both Ryder’s culture and ethos of Everything architecture.
I have been passionate about a career in architecture for as long I can remember. Since even the early years of primary school I have been inspired by the idea of working to design and make things that are tangible and make a positive impact on the world around us. Both my dad and my granddad pursued careers in construction, so I like to think this runs in the family!
After completing my third year at Glasgow School of Art I returned to Ryder for my Part 1. Over the course of the year my commitment to this career path has grown exponentially. Having the opportunity to be involved in many projects across a range of sectors and at various stages has been invaluable. Contributing to projects which will directly benefit communities is particularly rewarding.
Outside of projects, I’ve loved being a part of such an enthusiastic and encouraging team. Between fundraising hill walks and lunchtime potlucks, to team site visits, family days and trips to Paris, it has been so much fun!
After learning about the bursary, I was eager to apply. The prospect of continued support and mentorship from Ryder upon returning to university for my Part 2 studies was a huge opportunity. The submission also gave me a chance to dive into an area of architectural research which I’m really passionate about: exploring how interim reuse can address the vacant building stock.
Architects are at the forefront of championing reuse and creating lasting environmental and social value. I’m excited to be entering an industry that’s constantly evolving and pursuing a more sustainable future.
Reflecting on the past year at Ryder, I feel a great sense of gratitude and pride. I want to extend thanks to everyone for making me feel so welcome and their consistent support. The office is a space where I have been able to grow both professionally and personally.
I am excited to be back at Ryder next summer, but for now I’m looking forward to returning to university in September, as I keep working towards (eventually) qualifying as an architect in the future!
