Northumberland, UK - Industrial
Ryder delivered a new state of the art manufacturing facility in Ashington, Northumberland, for world renowned paints and coatings company AkzoNobel, on a site covering 100,000sqm. The development allowed AkzoNobel to double their previous UK production levels to 200 million litres per year, the equivalent of eighty million 2.5 litre cans of Dulux.
Sustainability was a key driver in the design, which achieved BREEAM Excellent with energy consumption reduced by 60 percent per litre of paint against previous levels. Water and waste reduction, recycling measures and biomass power generation was all integral to the facility. The development uses a variety of renewable energy sources, including photovoltaic cells and a biomass boiler, alongside the automated manufacturing process which saves water, waste and energy.
The plant comprises a main production building, a storage farm for raw materials, and a unique experience centre.
All manufacturing technologies within the plant are managed by a single integrated computer system. All key processes, from the ordering of raw materials to the shipping of finished products, can be initiated without operator intervention.
The development allowed AkzoNobel to double their previous UK production levels to 200 million litres per year.
AkzoNobel estimates that the carbon footprint per litre of paint produced at Ashington is reduced by 50 per cent compared to the facilities it replaced.
