Formally an outdated mixed use events community space, Angel Central is now a thriving new retail and leisure asset to its environment. Our repurposing approach was centred around enhancing the public realm, including developing new amenities, converting the existing car park to welcome new retail and leisure providers, and refurbishing the space’s recognisable angel wings sculpture.
Celebrating the existing angel wings sculpture, we collaborated with the artist Wolfgang Butress to breathe new life into his original piece, raising the wings by 4m. The extended first floor balcony and new bridge link gives shoppers a viewing platform, allowing the sculpture to be experienced with 360 views for the first time.
From the addition of new tiered seating at ground level, to al fresco dining areas on the new bridge link, our aim to open the space has created a light, interesting and welcoming environment. We used the same approach in the lighting design, to provide a seamless atmosphere at Angel Central for the day and nighttime economy.
