Ryder worked alongside designer-builder, Nomodic, to create a new affordable supportive housing development for BC Housing in Duncan, British Columbia.
The team was tasked to build a cost effective, inclusive and welcoming housing complex using prefabrication for some of the area’s most vulnerable people. The housing complex includes 48 purpose built studio units and provides homes for those experiencing, or are at risk of experiencing, homelessness in the community.
The wood framed, volumetric modules were designed and fabricated in a factory off island and transported to site. The building incorporates supportive program elements for residents, including access to medical health services, mental health and addiction services, food, laundry, and security. A common outdoor courtyard that responds to the steeply sloping site is provided, along with a separate, secure, dedicated rooftop deck area for women.
