Ryder was commissioned to lead the preparation of a town centre masterplan for Bishop Auckland.

This long term, deliverable regeneration strategy takes advantage of significant investment in the town, focused on Auckland Castle, Kynren and Market Place. Ryder led a team of consultants and brought together stakeholders including Durham County Council, The Auckland Project, Historic England, Durham University and Bishop Auckland Town Council.

The masterplan laid the foundation for the successful Future High Streets Fund bid (£19.8m) in 2020 and Stronger Towns Fund bid (£33.2m) in 2021.

Ryder supported the Council with these proposals including masterplanning, project funding development to RIBA Stage 2 for costing, and stakeholder and community engagement.

Our proposals promote the town centre as a visitor destination, whilst ensuring that Bishop Auckland is a well connected, distinctive, enterprising and sustainable market town for local people.
