Lanarkshire, Scotland - School
The innovative Chryston Community Hub integrates a primary school and primary care health centre for North Lanarkshire Council and NHS Lanarkshire on a parkland site. The combined Chryston Primary School and Community Health Clinic is within the first wave of a new direction of efficient service delivery and management led by the Scottish Government and councils.
Our approach puts the end user and place needs at the forefront of the design and ensures everyone is brought along on the design journey.
From the outset, our engagement process with the school and key stakeholders looked to discover where efficiencies could be found through shared accommodation as well as the benefits to both staff and the community this service could bring.
Creating an environment that was sensitive to different learner’s needs was integral to our approach; resulting in unique features such as retreat areas, an inhabited wall, a climbing wall, and a slide. The design of the hub is inspired by a series of pavilions in the park, allowing the school and clinic to retain their own identity while sharing support facilities, all filled with natural light and a direct connection to the surrounding landscape and its outside learning spaces.

The new primary school accommodates up to 509 pupils and the clinic provides 17 consultation rooms that serve the wider community.
Classbases are arranged in clusters around a central activity area to maximise learning opportunities and embrace alternative methods of teaching. A variety of spaces are spread across the building to support an engaging curriculum, from the drama box to the cooking areas, children can learn collaboratively, independently and suitably.
