Ryder produced proposals for a new cultural hub and plaza at Millennium Place which overlooks the River Wear in the heart of Durham city centre.

Sitting within the conservation area and the setting of the Grade I listed castle and cathedral and several other heritage assets, the square is an under used, uninviting space, which lacks identity and is not engaged with.

The new cultural plaza is an extension to the buildings and will be used as spill out for activities, encouraging dwell time and providing a vibrant, active and playful space that showcases Durham’s creativity.

The space has been designed to have the flexibility to host large events and gatherings, whilst maintaining zones dedicated to café spill and external dining.

Visual connectivity between the levels and different activities has been enhanced, and the public realm proposals facilitate improved security, surveillance and safety at all times of day.
