Durham, UK - University
Born from the significant growth in the departments of mathematical sciences and computer science, the new building provides Durham University with innovatory facilities. As part of the University’s wider masterplan, the new building enhances all aspects of their work, from teaching and research to industry and community collaboration.
The four storey building is designed as a pavilion hovering over a prairie landscape. Our aim was to integrate the building into the existing slope, introduced with an attenuation lake which acts as the focal point on approaching the building.
A focus point of the project was to pay homage to the conservation area it resides. The horizontal shape and size of the building and earthy tones of the external materials minimise its impact, integrating it as a part of the landscape.
We created an enriching teaching, learning and research environment reflective of the departments vision for collaboration. The internal spaces are organised on a main street upon which teaching, social and study areas provide flexibility for teaching staff and students.
