Redevelopment and integration of Grand Central, Birmingham New Street Station.  The brief expanded to develop the technical design for the atrium roof, realising the original vision created by AZPA Architects.  This complex project was created over five years, with the station remaining fully operational throughout.

A key element of the process was designing to minimise the impact on railway operations.  Managing pedestrian flow, providing easy orientation, and working with industry specific legislative standards were key considerations.

Our interior concept was based upon ideas that inspired the design for the station and developed connections with train travel.  Maximising visibility and creating a natural circulation route around restaurants and retail units was key to unlocking their potential.

On the upper level, the alignment of columns along the atrium edge was exploited to create smaller, more enclosed areas, allowing for variations in levels of openness and intimacy.  Booth seating was encouraged to echo the inspiration of the train carriage.
