Inspiring spaces for innovative transport solutions.

Our bespoke solution resulted in a highly efficient building with adaptable facilities to deliver Hitachi Rail’s new generation of improved passenger trains. The design of the building is founded on optimisation of the manufacturing process and each element was assessed for its efficiency; the large span roof maximises natural light and generates one megawatt of electricity via photovoltaic cells.

We are delighted with the outcome of this project both in design terms and deliverability for our client Hitachi Rail Europe – against all the odds we are proud to have brought this facility to the north east. We could not have hoped to find a harder working team to deliver this project.

Geoff Hunton

Director, Merchant Anglo Property Holdings.

Driven by collaboration.

We partnered with the Japanese train production team, who collocated into our office over a two year period, exploring options together to develop the optimum design.

A catalyst for sustainable journeys and careers.

Surpassing the original aim to create 700 Hitachi Rail jobs, the scheme saw over 1,200 people being directly employed, 8,000 supply chain jobs, and a further 600 opportunities for young apprentices in the north east.

This is Hitachi Rail’s first factory in Europe and their massive investment is a sign of their commitment to the United Kingdom and a real show of confidence in our economy and of confidence in the north east. I think this is a really big moment for the region. Train manufacturing has come back to the north east.

David Cameron

then prime minister.
