Opened in 1962 to commemorate Jamaica’s independence, Independence Park Stadium is the nation’s premier sporting venue. Ryder and CAA ICON are working in close partnership with the Jamaican Government to lead its redevelopment.
Continuing a sporting legacy
With a current capacity of 29,000, the stadium has long hosted major track and field events, football fixtures, and large scale concerts. The redevelopment will transform it into a future ready venue aligned with World Athletics and FIFA standards, increasing capacity to 37,500 and introducing a new roof structure providing 90% spectator coverage. A new Museum of Sport will sit alongside significant improvements to the surrounding public realm and infrastructure.
Appointed in 2025, the team undertook a comprehensive feasibility study, including detailed economic analysis of local and international demand. An ongoing programme of stakeholder engagement continued to shape and refine the design.

Celebrating national pride
Running through the heart of the site, a new Boulevard of Sport will form a clear and dynamic arrival route. This pedestrian spine connects key entrances and public spaces, celebrating Jamaica’s sporting heritage while improving wayfinding and ease of movement across the site.
New north and south fan zones will create vibrant destinations for pre and post event activity, bringing energy and atmosphere beyond the stadium bowl. Designed as social hubs, these spaces will host food and beverage, live entertainment, and informal gathering areas that extend the match day experience and activate the park throughout the year.

High performance facilities
To the west of the retained grandstand, a new Stadium Plaza will act as the civic centrepiece. This flexible space will support events, ceremonies, and everyday use, offering a welcoming setting for visitors and the wider community.
The existing training ground will be retained and enhanced for high performance use, with upgraded pitches, expanded facilities, and stronger integration with the wider precinct.
Greener by design
Landscape improvements will introduce new planting, green corridors, and sustainable drainage systems, enhancing biodiversity while supporting long term resilience and environmental performance across the park.
Access and operations will be streamlined through upgraded transport and arrival infrastructure, including additional parking and a dedicated VIP drop off. These improvements will reduce congestion and support efficient event day management.
