Newcastle upon Tyne - Office
Ryder interiors was appointed to deliver the refurbishment of NorthStandard’s headquarters on Newcastle’s Quayside, incorporating the design and colour palette from their recent rebrand. The fitout encompasses four floors including open workspaces, meeting rooms, a board room and an events space, as well as a gym and fitness studio.
Founded in Newcastle upon Tyne, NorthStandard is one of the world’s leading maritime insurers with a strong local heritage in the north east. The design reflects this through shape, colour and texture, all supported by the building’s outstanding views across the River Tyne and the city’s famous bridgescape.
The office design reflects NorthStandard’s brand identity, highlighting its heritage, cultural values, and ties to the local community.
The space blends maritime history with modern technology. Bespoke cabinetry and shelving showcase artefacts like model ships and logbooks, whilst graphics and patterns inspired by radar technology are integrated into panelling and furniture finishes. A neutral based material palette, with textures and tones drawn from waves and coastlines, softens the interior.
The new open plan layout removes desk dividers and introduces breakout spaces, creating flexibility for different working styles. On the ground floor, a bright atrium features an open kitchen for staff to connect and socialise. Additional amenities include wellbeing rooms, a fitness studio, showers and changing facilities, plus a fully equipped gym with views of the River Tyne.
Working closely with NorthStandard from the outset, we defined a clear scope for the refurbishment that blended the new design with existing features to reduce waste and maximise value. Key elements such as internal doors, ceilings, glazed screens, and furniture were carefully protected, refurbished, and seamlessly reintegrated into the final scheme.
