Oban, Scotland - School
Oban High School is a 1,300 pupil secondary school with new community facilities. The new building is at the south east edge of Oban, built adjacent to the former school.
A key driver of the project was for the building to serve both the school and wider community. The school provides a range of services and activities to help meet the needs of pupils, their families and the town, including music, dance, skills for work, adult education and hospitality. The school is in use well beyond the formal teaching day and is an integral part of the Oban community.
The new school is nestled within the backdrop of two large rock outcrops, one of which houses the scheduled monument of An Dunan. These historical, vernacular and prehistoric remains provided clues for our design approach, with the building appearing rooted in the rugged Scottish landscape.
The building is arranged with a series of bright, multifunctional social spaces at its heart, removing the need for dedicated assembly and dining spaces which are only used for limited periods of the day. These spaces are built around the curricular schools of dance, rugby and traditional music and can host large events, reinforcing links with the local community.
We worked closely with key stakeholders throughout the design and construction process, including Argyll and Bute Council, pupils, teachers, parents, the Community Council and the local Access Forum and the contractor, Morrison Construction.
