The Pavilion Restaurant is a new single level structure at the Royal Botanic Gardens offering visitors indoor and outdoor dining options all year round.
The building has a strong design narrative that is derived from its unique heritage setting. It has been designed to maximise views across the garden, particularly to the Pagoda and Temperate House and to sit sensitively between the protected ancient vines.
Designed to reflect the seasonal changes, the building blurs the boundaries between indoors and outdoors so that the pavilion is a fluid, continuous space harmonising with its landscape.
The black steel finishes, rational grid lighting and glass façade references the minimalist design approach to Japanese and Chinese designs seen throughout the gardens, whilst instilling a sense of calm and reflection.
The dining room’s minimalist palette, featuring natural timbers, dark treated metals, and polished concrete floors, enhances the core principles of Japanese design. The open plan layout seamlessly connects the retail space with the café, creating a harmonious flow between the two areas.
The project is inspired by Kew’s passion of plants as food, and to continue the onsite tradition of unique dining, enjoying ingredients grown and foraged at Kew. A simple functional palette of neutral material extends throughout the interiors, including patinated metal, concrete and timber, whilst the open kitchen with a wrapping perch bar allows visitors to experience the live theatre of food preparation.
