Stockport , UK - Healthcare
Working in partnership with Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, Ryder developed the new campus to overcome the challenges of Stockport’s unplanned care pathway. Stepping Hill Hospital required a larger emergency department in response to demographic changes within the local population. The larger facility needed to meet the hospitals four hour target, impacting on the control of infection, privacy and dignity of patients’ experiences.
A key aim was to create clearly defined streams of care. This leads patients from separate arrivals for blue light and self referrals through to clear navigation and wayfinding throughout the building, reducing anxiety and improving efficiency.
The redesign comprises retrofitting of the existing emergency department along with several extensions including a large new entrance.
On entry, a recessed brick plinth with exposed structure provides a new covered blue light drop off zone, and a separate pedestrian walk in entrance. Vertical metal cladding on the upper level contrasts elegantly with the lower brick tones. Internally, new areas include dedicated suites for mental health, paediatrics, rapid assessment, as well as same day emergency care. The first floor provides staff support facilities from training to wellbeing areas.
The clinical operational teams and the design and construction team worked collaboratively to ensure that the emergency department remained unaffected during the construction stages.
Each department across the new campus benefitted from a detailed stakeholder engagement process. Using a range of techniques, clinical functionality was tested against evidence based guidance and site constraints.
