Ryder designed and delivered the new Winchburgh and Sinclair Academies alongside the new Sport and Well Being Hub. Winchburgh Schools Campus is one of Scotland's most substantial educational investments.
Campus for community
Winchburgh’s expanding community required a pressing solution to the longstanding absence of a dedicated secondary school and modern sports and community facilities. The campus also includes Holy Family Primary School, crafted by jmarchitects.
Positioned within the Winchburgh Core Development Area, the project encompasses a newly established denominational secondary school, a non denominational secondary school, and shared physical education and community sports facilities, all nestled amidst the tranquil expanse of a parkland setting adjacent to the recently developed Auldcathie District Park.
A departure from conventional teaching spaces.
The schools are much more than a series of buildings but are designed as purposeful, inspirational learning environments for the growing and future community of Winchburgh. Instead of rigid, didactic classrooms, the schools feature versatile learning environments and integrated technology. Most notably, the classrooms adopt a three sided layout, seamlessly connecting them to circulation areas, breakout zones, and various flexible learning spaces.
Ryder and jmarchitects collaborated closely with West Lothian Council to establish the project’s goals and design aspirations. Together, we formulated a series of design principles to guide the construction and overall masterplan, ensuring seamless integration with the broader Winchburgh regeneration initiative.
Unique by design, familiar by nature.
Though individually distinct from each other, the buildings all share a common thread of materials, natural light and ventilation to present them as ‘schools in a park’. The east to west configuration of the buildings provides a learning journey from early years through primary, high school, and community. This purposeful approach aims to provide spaces which are both interesting and enjoyable places to learn, teach, and visit.

Work and play
The Sport and Well Being Hub is shared between the two academies, primary school, and provides a much needed community facility out of school hours – including a swimming pool, two sports halls, a gymnasium and multipurpose hall, meeting spaces, and fitness suite all with controlled access.
