Kaplan required a residential college which would compete with the best in the UK and overseas and attract international students to the city of Liverpool and prepare them for entry to the University of Liverpool.
Seen as a gateway to both the city and the university campus, the proposed site allows a commanding location at the head of Brownlow Hill with direct visibility to and from the campus. How the building best addresses this aspect, maintaining key vistas and avoiding the line of the Waterloo train tunnel, was key to our thinking.
The positioning and building design is both symbolic and practical and allows for a dramatic expression of the building form and a positive relationship with the university and city beyond. A legible design, both clearly identifiable and memorable.
