The sixth form college, which was delivered within a challenging 20 month programme,
provides flexible teaching accommodation for 1,200 students and 100 staff.
The building is arranged around a generous, top lit central spine which links the various curriculum, enrichment and social areas. The key focal point of the scheme is the beating heart. Expressed as a focal point of the spine, adjacent to the main entrance, the heart accommodates LRC, study areas, group working spaces and support services in a single location.
Arranged as a dramatic three storey volume, with views to and from the site entrance, the space ensures that learning is the focus on arrival. Curriculum areas are created with a clear threshold to ensure that there is a definite transition from the spine into each faculty. Each faculty is provided with dedicated break out areas for self guided study and a hub of teaching, staff and ancillary accommodation.
