Planning Permission for Newcastle Office Development

The proposed office development for Home Group’s new headquarters on Strawberry Lane, Newcastle, has been given development planning approval.

The scheme, developed by Ryder Architecture, includes over 70,000sqft of flexible Grade A office space and comprises six storeys and a basement level; the ground floor will include a café, informal presentation areas and a business lounge.

The development will relocate almost 700 administrative and customer service staff from their current offices across North Tyneside to the city centre site in the emerging St. James’ Quarter.

The move to the city centre aims to reduce Home Group’s carbon footprint, with staff travelling in more sustainable ways, such as cycling, using public transport and car sharing. The new building will include extensive cycle storage and changing facilities to support this.

As well as accommodating Home Group staff, a key driver in this development is to create spaces to support the voluntary sector in the city centre, through enablement, collaboration and innovation.

The building is expected to bring significant economic value to the city. Analysis suggests that an additional 700 employees will boost Newcastle’s daytime and evening economies by close to £2m per year. The proposed build is also expected to support an estimated 400 construction and supply chain jobs per year, during the 22 month construction period, bringing around £24m per year to the region.
