Ryder Architecture and its partners Northumbria University and University of the Built Environment are campaigning for a radical rethink of built environment education.
As long term advocates for a more diverse and equitable route into professional careers in the built environment, Reinvention 2026 is a call to arms for government, industry and academia to collaborate on realising a new Level 6 apprenticeship programme, building on our original Reinvention initiative in 2018.
With impacts of COVID, the Moore-Bick enquiry into the Grenfell disaster, international conflicts and socio-economic volatility, the time is right to revisit progress and recalibrate solutions.

Ryder, in partnership with Northumbria University, University of the Built Environment and other learning providers, has led a government-sponsored apprentice Trailblazer group including Arup, Laing O’Rourke, Vinci and CIOB, to develop a Level 6 design construction and management degree apprenticeship, building on the proven success of PlanBEE.
This qualification has been designed in partnership with Skills England and is currently ready for delivery, pending final approval of its funding band.
Throughout the campaign, we’ll be publishing a series of impactful thought leadership pieces, engaging industry influencers in round table discussions, contributing to Building’s Good Employer Guide Live skills panel and producing a special report in collaboration with Building Magazine to stimulate debate and raise the profile of the need for change in built environment education.
We are calling for employers and educators to invest in this transformative approach by joining us in lobbying government for change and adopting and delivering this apprenticeship without delay. The new Level 6 apprenticeship programme builds on the award winning success of interdisciplinary, work based learning.
In 2016, Ryder Architecture and Gateshead College, backed by industry sponsors, launched PlanBEE – and intensive two year rotational apprenticeship in design, construction and management.
Now operational in London, Manchester, Newcastle and Vancouver, PlanBEE wields awards including one of the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Higher and Further Education.
Similar results are seen globally in cross curricular models in Finland and Germany, exploring real world challenges from multiple perspectives.
