Duncan, BC, CA - Residential
The BC Housing Supportive Housing Development is a response to urgent need for housing in North Cowichan on Vancouver Island. Accommodating 52 purpose built studio housing units, we worked with design-builder Nomodic to provide homes for vulnerable individuals who are experiencing, or are at risk of homelessness in the community.
From the outset, we worked with Nomodic and BC Housing to manage a truly collaborative process. We engaged consistently with design team members and organised design sprints to meet targets. As the project was fast tracked, it was also integral we prepared our team for fabrication and modular design processes as the project progressed.
With 36 modules being assembled in just nine days, we significantly accelerated the project schedule. Prefabrication and modular building design was hugely advantageous, giving us the ability to review and mock-up elements within the factory. Additionally, we could control quality and adjust designs across multiple modules if needed.
The inaugural modular project of Ryder Vancouver served as a valuable learning experience, broadening our understanding of technology’s role in informing future architectural planning and design projects.
Beyond offering secure housing, this project has since integrated food provision, medical services, mental health, and addiction recovery support for those who call Paddle Road home.
